Frank Ticheli’s Cajun Folk Songs is a vibrant and emotional work for concert band based on traditional melodies from the Cajun culture of southern Louisiana. Written in 1990, the piece pays tribute to the resilience, traditions, and storytelling of the Cajun people while preserving folk songs that were passed down orally for generations.

The Cajun people are descendants of the Acadians, French settlers who lived in Acadia—present-day Nova Scotia, Canada—beginning in the early 1600s. In 1755, during what became known as “The Great Expulsion,” thousands of Acadians were forced from their homes by the British. Many eventually settled in the bayous and prairies of southern Louisiana, where they developed the unique Cajun culture known today for its rich food, language, dancing, and music. Despite generations of hardship, the Cajun people preserved their traditions through storytelling and folk songs that reflected everyday life, love, humor, and loss.

In the 1930s, folklorists Alan and John Lomax traveled through Louisiana recording traditional Cajun musicians for the Library of Congress. Their recordings helped preserve authentic Cajun folk music at a time when commercial music was beginning to change the style and sound of the tradition. Frank Ticheli drew inspiration from these preserved recordings when composing Cajun Folk Songs.

The composition features two traditional melodies: La Belle et le Capitaine and Belle. The first tells the story of a young woman who pretends to be dead in order to avoid the advances of a captain. The melody shifts naturally between different meters, giving it a free and expressive folk-like quality. The second song, Belle, is a heartbreaking ballad about a man who travels to Texas for work, only to learn that his sweetheart has become gravely ill. He rushes home and even pawns his horse in an attempt to save her, but arrives too late.

One especially interesting aspect of this piece is that although the music sounds joyful and energetic at times, many traditional Cajun folk songs tell stories filled with struggle, heartbreak, and perseverance. This contrast reflects the spirit of the Cajun people themselves—finding joy, celebration, and community even through difficult circumstances. Through colorful orchestration, lively rhythms, and expressive melodies, Ticheli transforms these historic folk tunes into a powerful musical tribute to a culture that has endured for centuries.
